    An Analysis of Modern Day Fire Attack Hose

    The fire attack hose serves two important purposes: carrying the water crucial for fire suppression and providing firefighters with a lifeline to safety. These hoses are typically made of combustible materials, operate at high pressure, endure extremely harsh and thermally intense environments, face rough storage conditions, and are repeatedly dragged along rough surfaces. This research is an analysis of modern day fire attack hoses with four main areas of research, including: 1. Design and build the very first fire attack hose burn-through database; 2. Analyzing U.S. and international fire hose codes and standards; 3. Gather the first-hand experience of the fire service with the modern fire attack hose; 4. Develop a taxonomy of material properties needed in a next generation fire hose

    The structure of the title compound, [Co(C5H6NO4)3], consists of a CoIII ion octahedrally coordinated by three bidentate 3-nitro­pentane-2,4-dionate ligands. The complex was prepared via the nitration of tris­(2,4-penta­nedionato-κ2 O,O′)cobalt(III) with a solution of copper(II) nitrate in glacial acetic acid. The central C atom and the nitro group of one 3-nitro­pentane-2,4-dionate ligand are disordered over two positions with an occupancy ratio of 0.848 (4):0.152 (4). A second nitro group is also disordered over two orientations with an occupancy ratio of 0.892 (7):0.108 (7). Two of the ligand methyl groups form C—H⋯O inter­actions with two different nitro groups to form chains running along the c axis. Additional C—H⋯O inter­actions are found between ligand methyl groups and the cobalt-bound O atoms, also resulting in the formation of chains along the c axis

    For our project we worked with a group called brain wellness in Oviedo. Their purpose is to provide fun brain enriching activities to older individuals suffering from dementia. We assisted in activities such as word matching games, rearranging popsicle sticks in order to make certain patterns that were displayed on a screen, and even card games like go fish. Some key things that we learned was how to address some issues that surround dementia such as trying to convince someone that they shouldn’t be driving at their age and not make that person feel upset.     Frost trends and their estimated impact on yield in the Australian wheatbelt

    Radiant spring frosts occurring during reproductive developmental stages can result in catastrophic yield loss for wheat producers. To better understand the spatial and temporal variability of frost, the occurrence and impact of frost events on rain-fed wheat production was estimated across the Australian wheatbelt for 1957–2013 using a 0.05 ° gridded weather data set. Simulated yield outcomes at 60 key locations were compared with those for virtual genotypes with different levels of frost tolerance. Over the last six decades, more frost events, later last frost day, and a significant increase in frost impact on yield were found in certain regions of the Australian wheatbelt, in particular in the South-East and West. Increasing trends in frost-related yield losses were simulated in regions where no significant trend of frost occurrence was observed, due to higher mean temperatures accelerating crop development and causing sensitive post-heading stages to occur earlier, during the frost risk period. Simulations indicated that with frost-tolerant lines the mean national yield could be improved by up to 20 through (i) reduced frost damage (~10 improvement) and (ii) the ability to use earlier sowing dates (adding a further 10 improvement). In the simulations, genotypes with an improved frost tolerance to temperatures 1 °C lower than the current 0 °C reference provided substantial benefit in most cropping regions, while greater tolerance (to 3 °C lower temperatures) brought further benefits in the East. The results indicate that breeding for improved reproductive frost tolerance should remain a priority for the Australian wheat industry, despite warming climates

    The International Docking Adapter's Peripheral Docking Target (PDT) was designed to allow a docking spacecraft to judge its alignment relative to the docking system. The PDT was designed to be compatible with relative sensors using visible cameras, thermal imagers, or Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technologies. The conceptual design team tested prototype designs and materials to determine the contrast requirements for the features. This paper will discuss the design of the PDT, the methodology and results of the tests, and the conclusions pertaining to PDT design that were drawn from testing

    Transcription factor control of growth rate dependent genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae: A three factor design

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Characterization of cellular growth is central to understanding living systems. Here, we applied a three-factor design to study the relationship between specific growth rate and genome-wide gene expression in 36 steady-state chemostat cultures of <it>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</it>. The three factors we considered were specific growth rate, nutrient limitation, and oxygen availability.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We identified 268 growth rate dependent genes, independent of nutrient limitation and oxygen availability. The transcriptional response was used to identify key areas in metabolism around which mRNA expression changes are significantly associated. Among key metabolic pathways, this analysis revealed <it>de novo </it>synthesis of pyrimidine ribonucleotides and ATP producing and consuming reactions at fast cellular growth. By scoring the significance of overlap between growth rate dependent genes and known transcription factor target sets, transcription factors that coordinate balanced growth were also identified. Our analysis shows that Fhl1, Rap1, and Sfp1, regulating protein biosynthesis, have significantly enriched target sets for genes up-regulated with increasing growth rate. Cell cycle regulators, such as Ace2 and Swi6, and stress response regulators, such as Yap1, were also shown to have significantly enriched target sets.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our work, which is the first genome-wide gene expression study to investigate specific growth rate and consider the impact of oxygen availability, provides a more conservative estimate of growth rate dependent genes than previously reported. We also provide a global view of how a small set of transcription factors, 13 in total, contribute to control of cellular growth rate. We anticipate that multi-factorial designs will play an increasing role in elucidating cellular regulation.</p

    Molecular Epidemiology of Tuberculosis in a Sentinel Surveillance Population

    We conducted a population-based study to assess demographic and risk-factor correlates for the most frequently occurring Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotypes from tuberculosis (TB) patients. The study included all incident, culture-positive TB patients from seven sentinel surveillance sites in the United States from 1996 to 2000. M. tuberculosis isolates were genotyped by IS6110-based restriction fragment length polymorphism and spoligotyping. Genotyping was available for 90% of 11,923 TB patients. Overall, 48% of cases had isolates that matched those from another patient, including 64% of U.S.-born and 35% of foreign-born patients. By logistic regression analysis, risk factors for clustering of genotypes were being male, U.S.-born, black, homeless, and infected with HIV; having pulmonary disease with cavitations on chest radiograph and a sputum smear with acid-fast bacilli; and excessive drug or alcohol use. Molecular characterization of TB isolates permitted risk correlates for clusters and specific genotypes to be described and provided information regarding cluster dynamics over time
